FMCSA just went on the record about the Motus rollout in an interview with TruckSafe, and there is real news in it for carriers. We have covered Motus twice already, what it is and how to work through the launch problems. Here is where things stand now, kept fair and simple.

Episode Highlights

FMCSA Admits It Has Been Rough, and Explains Why

FMCSA was honest that Motus is not where they want it yet. The system was mandated years ago and kept getting delayed. The job was to merge seven old, failing databases into one, and a lot of that old data is fragmented, with corrupt records going back decades.

They gave a telling example. In the old system you could enter a phone number in any format. Motus is strict about it, so bad old data gets stuck at the front door and jams things up. That is behind a lot of the errors people are hitting.

The Most Important Takeaway: You May Not Need to Do Anything Yet

This is the part worth hearing clearly. FMCSA said directly that if you log in and everything shows active, and you are not having any insurance problems, you do not have to move your information over right now. You can wait until it is actually time to update your MCS-150.

So if nothing is broken for you today, you do not need to rush in and force it. If you do have a problem, an inactive status, an insurance filing issue, or a change to make, that is when you go in and deal with it.

Where It’s Getting Better, and Where It’s Still Stuck

FMCSA says they are meeting twice a day, working seven days a week in sprints, and prioritizing the biggest issues first, specifically insurance filings and operating authority status. Ticket volume is coming down as they fix root problems.

But they were upfront about one issue: in some cases your status in Motus can show active while the downstream systems brokers and states rely on have not caught up. So your dashboard and what others see about your authority might not match right away. If your authority matters for a booking, verify what is showing publicly, and if it is off, contact FMCSA. They have added call center staff and extended their hours.

One Thing Coming Down the Road

FMCSA also signaled where this is heading. They mailed 2.2 million letters about the Motus move, and 450,000 came back undelivered, a sign of how many records are out of date. Their message: keeping your registration current is going to matter more, not less. Even if you are waiting to move over, make sure your contact info and company official details are accurate.

The Bottom Line

Motus is still being fixed, but it is improving. If your record shows active and you have no insurance issues, you can wait to move over. If you have a problem, go in and handle it. Keep your info current, verify your authority when it counts, and use FMCSA support if you are stuck.

Why This Matters for Your Cash Flow

Your registration status is tied directly to your ability to get paid. Brokers and shippers verify your authority before they book you. If your record is inactive, suspended, or out of date, loads dry up and payments stop with them.

Keeping your information current in Motus is not just a compliance task. It protects your ability to keep hauling and keep cash moving.
