Most people who start small trucking businesses do so with their own personal savings. But you may have heard of several grant programs available to start a small business in the US.
So let’s talk about how to find grants to start a trucking business and give you the resources you need to apply.
Leer este artículo en español.
What is a grant?
A grant is a sum of money that is awarded to a person or entity (in this case, a small business) to help them fund a specific project or activity. The purpose of the grant may vary, but it is typically aimed at supporting a specific goal or objective.
For example, a small business might apply for “seed money” to purchase equipment or cover other startup costs.

How do grants work?
Grants can come from government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private foundations. To be eligible for a grant, your business may have to meet certain criteria, such as being a certain size or belonging to a marginalized group (women, LGBTQ+, veterans, racial minority, etc.).
Applying for a grant involves writing a grant proposal that outlines your project or activity, explains why it’s important, and describes how you plan to use the grant funds.
The grant proposal usually includes a budget that details how you will spend the money and how much you need. Once you have a complete proposal, you will need to submit it to the grant provider, either by mail or online, depending on the application process.
When a small business is awarded a grant, they typically have to use the funds for the specific purpose outlined in the grant proposal. They may also be required to report on the progress of the project and the outcomes achieved with the grant funds.
Where can I find grants for my trucking business?
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Grants
The FMCSA offers several grant programs to support the trucking industry, such as the Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Grant Program, which provides funding for training programs for commercial motor vehicle operators.
But the best bet for finding grant money or other forms of support for your small trucking business is to look to organizations and agencies on the state and local level.
State and Local Grants
Many state and local governments offer grants to small businesses in their communities. These grants may be targeted toward specific industries, geographical areas, or minoritized groups.
A good first stop is to check with your state’s economic development agency or local Chamber of Commerce to see if there are any available grants or programs that provide resources for entrepreneurs.
